When is Autumn in the UK? A guide to the season of change

Autumn in the UK is a beautiful, if sometimes damp, season. It's a time of transformation, from the fiery colours of the leaves to the cosy evenings spent indoors. But when does it actually begin? The answer isn't as simple as you might think, as there are two different ways to define it.

1. The astronomical Autumn

This is the most "official" definition, based on the Earth's orbit around the sun. Astronomical autumn begins with the autumnal equinox, which happens when the sun is directly above the equator, making the day and night of nearly equal length.

The date of the autumnal equinox varies slightly each year, but it typically falls on September 22nd or 23rd. From this point on, the days in the Northern Hemisphere get progressively shorter and the nights get longer until the winter solstice in December. This is the moment when nature's cycle officially shifts, and the UK starts to tilt away from the sun's direct warmth.

2. The meteorological Autumn

For meteorologists and weather forecasters, the seasons are split into four fixed periods of three months each. This makes it easier to compare and analyse weather data year-on-year.

Under this system, meteorological autumn always starts on September 1st and ends on November 30th. This is a much simpler and more consistent way to track the season, and it's why you'll often see news reports referring to "the start of autumn" on the first day of September.

So, which one is correct?

Both are! The astronomical calendar is based on a scientific phenomenon, while the meteorological calendar is a practical tool for data analysis. For most people in the UK, the feeling of autumn begins long before the equinox. You'll notice the signs in late August and early September:

The nights start to "draw in" earlier.

The first signs of golden and crimson leaves appear on the trees.

The air gets that distinctive crisp chill in the mornings and evenings.

Whether you follow the astronomical date or the meteorological one, the change of seasons in the UK is a truly magical time. It's a period of transition, full of colour, cool breezes, and the promise of a comforting winter ahead.
